Habit Training:
How Distraction Forms Us

Walter Benjamin observed that we do not experience architecture by staring at it with concentrated attention. We absorb it through use: through walking the same corridor, sitting in the same chair, moving through a space until the body learns its rhythms without thinking.

"Tactile appropriation is accomplished not so much by attention as by habit."
— Walter Benjamin, "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" (1935)

Distraction, for Benjamin, is not simply failure. It is the medium through which habits form. A space, physical or digital, trains your body before you notice it is being trained.

Benjamin on Habit & Distraction

Core Concept · English
Benjamin argues that modern perception shifts from contemplation to distraction. Cinema and architecture condition the body to receive shocks, rhythms, and images without deliberate attention. Habit is the residue of repeated encounter: what the body learns to expect, anticipate, and move toward automatically.
Digital spaces do the same: every scroll, tap, notification, and repeated route is a small training.

Choose a Space to Observe

Pick one physical or digital space that you inhabit regularly.

Pick one or more:

What Has Your Body Learned?

Benjamin says we appropriate space through touch and movement, not just through looking. Notice what your body does automatically here.

Body behaviors:
Body speed/tone:

Mapping Your Habits

Habits are built from repetition. Answer each question about your chosen space.

What This Space Makes Visible

Every space has a regime of visibility: things it continually places in front of you.

This space keeps showing me:

What This Space Hides

Every regime of visibility has a shadow. What becomes invisible because you are trained to look elsewhere?

What gets hidden:
When I am made to see ___, ___ becomes invisible.

What Subject Is Being Formed?

Benjamin's insight: habit forms subjects. Through repeated exposure, you are being shaped into a person who responds in predictable ways.

Recognize your subject pattern:
Do you want to de-condition this habit?
Is it I who uses this space,
or is this space using me?

While the timer runs, notice the body: where is tension, ease, impulse, or restlessness? Just observe. No need to change anything.

Softening the Sediment

New habits form through repeated small encounters, not only through sudden insight. A small change in how you enter a space can loosen what has settled.

Choose one small reorientation:
Next time when
I will first
再 · and then

Through architecture, media, everyday routines, and repeated use, the body learns how to perceive, move, desire, and respond.
